The REALTORS® of South Central Kansas (RSCK) released a campaign in June 2023, to advocate for lowering property taxes and helping keep families in their homes. As municipalities approach the time to set their annual budgets, RSCK is encouraging the public to speak up about lowering the mill levy to offset the drastically increasing home valuations.

Two families have spoken up about the increases in their property taxes that may force them out of their homes. Kristina Ganow and Kacie Ciarmoli, a teacher and a nurse, respectively, shared in interviews the financial hardship that rising inflation and property taxes have had on their families.

The Ganow family has faced a 44% increase in property taxes over the last two years. Struggling to budget for groceries and necessary home improvements, Kristina states: “I’m hoping I can speak up to put a stop to this because I do believe that there are families out there that are homeless because of this. There are families out there that are in less fortunate of a situation than we are that do not have a two-income household … and are affected more than we are.”

As REALTORS®, we help many people achieve their dream of homeownership. Now, we need the public to help keep that dream alive. Talk to your elected officials about lowering the mill levy, encourage them to be strategic in balancing the budget, and vote in your local elections in 2023.
