Realtors play a pivotal role in combating housing discrimination, guided by the principles of the Fair Housing Act and the ethical standards set by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). This month we celebrate fair housing for all!

Understanding the Fair Housing Act

Enacted as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, the Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing-related transactions based on race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), familial status, national origin, and disability. This encompasses actions such as refusing to sell or rent a dwelling, altering terms or conditions, using discriminatory advertising, misrepresenting availability, and practices like redlining. ​

GCAR's Commitment to Fair Housing

We hold a strong stance against housing discrimination in Grand County. NAR's Code of Ethics explicitly prohibits discriminatory practices, aligning with both federal and local fair housing laws. Members found violating these standards may face sanctions, emphasizing the our dedication to equal housing opportunities.

Educational Initiatives and Resources

To equip real estate professionals with the necessary tools to uphold fair housing principles, NAR offers various resources, including:​

• Fairhaven Simulation Training: An interactive program designed to help REALTORS® identify and prevent discriminatory practices. Visit: https://fairhaven.realtor Member login is required to complete the simulation for free!
• Comprehensive Guides: Materials detailing compliance strategies with fair housing law can be found on the ​National Association of REALTORS® website.

Ongoing Efforts and Future Directions

NAR continues to reflect on the progress made since the enactment of the Fair Housing Act and recognizes the ongoing work required to eliminate discrimination in housing markets. Through research, member feedback, and community engagement, REALTORS® are encouraged to actively promote diversity and inclusivity within the real estate industry. ​

By adhering to these principles and utilizing available resources, REALTORS® are instrumental in fostering equitable housing opportunities for all individuals.
