Spring has finally sprung, and it is time to get your house ready!

Here are just a few tips for getting started with your spring cleaning around your home.

  • The number one insurance claim nationwide is damage from leaking refrigerator water lines. I recommend replacing them with Braided stainless lines, they are inexpensive and easy to install.
  • Braided stainless clothes washer lines are more burst resistant than black rubber hoses.
  • Clean your clothes dryer and vent as lint can build up and become a fire hazard. Use a smooth metal dryer vent because they collect less lint and contain lint fires better if they happen.
  • Smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years at the latest and be sure to change the batteries every six months. Interconnected, photo-electric smoke detectors with a carbon monoxide detector are my favorite. They now make detectors that connect with radio signals so that hardwiring is not needed. They detect smoke much better than the more common ionizing models.
  • Furnace filters should be changed often – with every month not being overkill – as pollen from trees and road construction dust travel a long way. A clean filter will keep your furnace fan from overworking and keep your lungs happy as well. Having the HVAC system serviced annually is always a good idea. Ductwork cleaning is worth every cent, you will be surprised how much dust and debris they get out.
  • Clean out gutters and make sure the downspouts extend past flower beds and away from the home to keep water away.
  • Clean your air conditioning condenser and test it before the first hot spell. Once it gets hot everyone finds out the AC doesn't work, and the heating and cooling contractor's will be booked.

Happy June!

It is great to be Greater.
