Government Affairs Committee Message Committee Message
Dwyn Thudium
Government Affairs Committee, Chair
As autumn quietly nudges summer aside and September’s promise of cooler weather beckons, the Governmental Affairs Committee has been hard at work, hosting interviews with local candidates who are running for Wichita City Council and the USD 259 School Board.
On the afternoon of August 18, we welcomed candidates from three districts to participate in our interview sessions. Those who joined us were Michael Hoheisel (District III), Brett Anderson (District VI), Maggie Ballard (District VI), LaWanda DeSazer (District I) and Joseph Shepard (District I). Each candidate had their own thoughtful commentary, sharing their unique insights on housing, neighborhood revitalization, and the evolving needs of our growing metropolitan area. Throughout these conversations, the committee was reminded of the depth of talent and dedication among those aspiring to public service in Wichita. Each candidate displayed a commitment to collaborative solutions and responsible governance.
The afternoon of August 19, we interviewed those seeking positions on the USD 259 School Board—a critical body influencing our city’s educational direction and, by extension, its community fabric. We began with interviews for District 2 with Julie Hedrick, Brent Davis, and Valerie Most, each addressing their own concerns. District 6 candidates Hazel Stabler and Amy Warren came with their own thoughts of the direction they feel USD 259 needs to go. District 5 candidate Amy Jensen offered her perspective on strategic resource allocation and community engagement in our schools. Rounding out the day were District 1 candidates, Diane Albert and Mackenzie Truelove shared their visions for the future of the school district. Each candidate is concerned about academic excellence and supporting students in a rapidly changing educational landscape.
Throughout these interviews, the Committee was encouraged by the high caliber of candidates. Their passion for nurturing the next generation and addressing the challenges of public education was evident, offering hope for a bright future for USD 259 students and families.
With September upon us and the anticipation of crisp mornings and gentle breezes ahead, our Committee is grateful for the meaningful exchanges we’ve had with this year’s City Council and School Board candidates. We thank all candidates for their time, candor, and dedication to public service.
As we continue our work this fall, the Governmental Affairs Committee remains committed to keeping our members informed and engaged on the issues and individuals that shape our city’s trajectory. We encourage all members to stay involved, participate in any upcoming forums, and exercise their right to vote when the time comes. Together, we can ensure that the voice of the REALTOR community continues to be a vital part of Wichita’s civic dialogue.
Here’s to a productive season ahead—and to the welcome return of cooler weather!
